Welcome to the HON plugins project!
IntroductionThis project aims at developing Mozilla / Netscape plugins to support the Health On the Net Foundation (HON).
HON, created in 1995, is a not-for-profit International Swiss Organization and an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. HON's mission is to guide lay persons or non-medical users and medical practitioners to useful and reliable online medical and health information. HON provides leadership in setting ethical standards for Web site developers.
The Health On the Net Foundation has elaborated the Code of Conduct (HONcode) to help standardise the reliability of medical and health information available on the World-Wide Web. It is not an award system, nor does it intend to rate the quality of the information provided by a Web site. It only defines a set of rules to:
- hold Web site developers to basic ethical standards in the presentation of information;
- help make sure readers always know the source and the purpose of the data they are reading.
HON has therefore created the HONcode seal
to be displayed on HONcode accredited Web sites and a search engine,
HONcodeHunt, to search for HONcode accredited Web sites.
The pluginsThree plugins based on the HONcode were developed by NetUnion within the European project Active-Health:
-
HONcode Status: this plugin adds a button to the browser's toolbar. When the user is visiting a HONcode accredited
Web site, the HONcode seal is displayed and clicking on it will open the HONcode verification page for the Web site. If the
Web site is not accredited, the button turns grey. Two versions are available: one for Mozilla / Netscape and one for
Mozilla Firebird.

-
HONlookup: this plugin is based on the Qlookup plugin. It adds the option
'Lookup at HONcodeHunt' to the right-click context menu. This options allows you to search for the selected text on HONcodeHunt.
Compatibility:
-
HONcodeHunt Sherlock plugin: a Sherlock plugin to search on HONcodeHunt (also available
on the Mycroft site).

Instructions on how to install / uninstall are available in the Installation page. Don't forget to look at the screenshots before. After installing, you can look at the usage instructions to learn how to use these plugins.
Similar plugins have also been developed for Internet Explorer. They are available on the HONcode toolbar page.
